Smarticle #1 Monocle Mania

MONOCLE MANIA
If you don’t know what a monocle is, let me tell you. A monocle is kind of like a pair of glasses. You know, the ones people use to see or read – (not like the ones you drink out of, that would be silly…and wrong!). Except for there are two big differences. First, a pair of glasses has two lenses. Do you know what lenses are? Lenses are made of glass or plastic and are the part of the glasses that help people see things in better detail- They are see through things that people see through – literally. (That’s a word I use all the time – so do a lot of other people – but a lot of times I don’t think they use it the right way. Because when you say literally – it means what you said is exactly what you meant…but usually what they really mean is that it was kind of like what they said.

…Anyway, as I was saying. Glasses help you see better by holding a pair of lenses that focus your vision. The part of the glasses that holds those lenses in place in front of your eyes is called the frame. Frames have arms that extend over your ears to help keep them in place. Soooo….the two BIG differences between glasses and a monocle is that a monocle only has one lens, aaaaand the way you hold it in front of your eyes is by using the muscles around your eye, not a frame. If you haven’t see one before, it looks like this….

One more thing you should know. A monocle usually comes with one other accessory (an accessory is something you use with something else…kind of like your ear buds are an accessory for your iPhone for when you want listen to music.) So, an accessory people use with a monocle is a string or chain. The reason you use it with a monocle is so you can attach it to somewhere else on your clothes so you don’t lose it.

Soooo…now that I’ve told you what a monocle and an accessory are, I can explain why I have one. First, I use one because I think it is a fun! Another is that I think it is a cute accessory to go with my clothes. Also, I think it is a cool symbol to help me show people that I am curious. And I like them to know that about me, because I’m …..you guessed it GREGARIOUS! Oh…and in case you didn’t know, a symbol is something that stands for something else. Like people draw a light bulb over someone’s head to act as a symbol for them having an idea.

Now you that you know a little about me – I hope we can catch up again soon so I can tell you a lot more…about my four brothers…and the classes I like at school…and the sports I like to play, the things I like to eat (I’ll give you a hint – they’re not cold, and they’re not cats) ..oh wait I think I just messed up and gave you two hints! …and a whole lot more.

See you soon! Sincerely (sincerely is a word that means you really mean what you are saying – literally)
